Where the author name hides in a PDF
A PDF stores descriptive information in two places: the Info dictionary (a set of
key-value fields including Author, Title, Subject, Creator, Producer, and the creation and
modification dates) and, in modern files, an XMP metadata packet that duplicates much of it
in XML. The /Author field is usually populated automatically from your operating
system account name or your full name as configured in the authoring software — so a document
you meant to share anonymously can quietly carry your identity.
How to remove it
- Drop your PDF into the box above.
- The inspector lists the author, creator, dates, and other fields it found.
- Clean the file with one click.
- Download the cleaned PDF — the Author and related fields are emptied and the XMP packet is removed.
Does it change the document?
No. The page content, fonts, images, and layout are untouched. Only the metadata fields and the XMP packet are cleared. Because the file is rebuilt from a clean object graph rather than appended to, the old author value is not recoverable from an earlier revision inside the file.
A note on visible text
This removes hidden metadata, not visible content. If your name appears in the body text of the PDF, you will need to redact that separately. For the full picture, see our guide on why PDF metadata matters, or use the full-featured PDF metadata remover.
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove just the author name from a PDF?
Drop the PDF into the tool above and clean it. The Author field in the Info dictionary is emptied, along with the related Creator and Producer fields and the XMP packet that can also carry your name.
Will the PDF still open normally after cleaning?
Yes. Only the metadata is changed. The pages, fonts, images, and layout are identical, and the file opens normally in any PDF reader.
Can the original author name be recovered afterward?
No. The file is re-serialized from a clean object graph, so the cleared author value is not retained as a recoverable earlier revision.
Does this remove my name if it is written on the page?
No. This removes hidden metadata only. If your name appears in the visible text, you must redact that separately.
Does it work on signed or encrypted PDFs?
Editing metadata invalidates a digital signature, so clean before signing. Encrypted PDFs generally need to be unlocked first.
Is the PDF uploaded to a server?
No. The PDF is processed entirely in your browser using JavaScript. It never leaves your device.
